"Why
can’t I see any pink houses here, mamma?" my six‑year‑old
daughter Mrunmayi asked with wide‑eyed curiosity as we stepped out of Jaipur
airport. She had been eagerly waiting to spot the famous rosy façades of the Pink
City Jaipur. I reassured her gently, “Patience, my dear. Once we enter
the city, you’ll see them everywhere.”
This
trip was extra special because it was her first big family holiday and
she had been dreaming about it for months. A few months earlier, her father had
gifted her a bedtime storybook titled “My Holiday in Rajasthan.” The
book narrated the adventures of a toddler and his mother exploring Rajasthan —
riding camels, spotting peacocks, sliding down sand dunes, and savoring local
delicacies like dal bati churma and malpua.
At
just six years old, Mrunmayi had already built her own checklist inspired by
the book: see the colorful cities, stay in a palace, spot peacocks, ride a
camel cart, eat traditional sweets, and slide down the desert dunes. Every
night she would ask, “When will I see Rajasthan, Baba?” until her father
finally planned this trip.
So,
on a dusky March morning, we flew from Pune to Rajasthan for her maiden family
holiday — a week‑long journey across six cities in eight days, filled with
laughter, discovery, and memories of a lifetime.
Destination 1: Jaipur – The Pink
City
Her excitement peaked when we finally spotted the first pink structure near Hawa
Mahal. The cab driver smiled and said, “Beta, you’ll see many more inside the city.”
We explored:
· Amber Fort: Its carvings and panoramic views left us
awestruck.
· Jal Mahal: A palace floating serenely on Man Sagar
Lake.
· City Palace & Jantar Mantar: A blend of royal heritage and
astronomical brilliance.
· Birla Mandir: A marble temple radiating peace.
At night, the illuminated pink façades glowed under spotlights, fulfilling her
long‑awaited wish.
Destination 2: Bikaner – Palaces
and Peacocks
At Lalgarh Palace, peacocks greeted us at the gate. Mrunmayi squealed with joy, asking why they weren’t opening their feathers. To our amazement, a few did — dancing as if just for her.
We also visited:
· Junagarh Fort & City Palace: Stunning carvings, arms, and artifacts.
· World War I Aircraft: A reminder of Bikaner’s royal valor.
· Camel Research Center: Our first camel ride — thrilling for her, nerve‑wracking for me!
Destination 3: Sam Sand Dunes –
Desert Magic
At Sam Sand Dunes, endless waves of sand stretched like an ocean. We
built sandcastles, rode a camel cart, and watched the sunset while folk
musicians played soulful tunes.
The evening brought:
· A campfire under the stars.
· Rajasthani folk dance, where Mrunmayi and I joined the performers.
· Traditional dinner featuring dal bati churma — another tick on her list.
Destination 4: Jaisalmer – The
Golden City
Known as the Golden City, Jaisalmer glowed with yellow sandstone architecture. The sunlight transformed the city into a golden jewel.
We explored:
· Patwon Ki Haveli: Intricate carvings on yellow stone.
· Temples and Forts: Showcasing desert artistry.
· Local bazaars: Filled with handicrafts and souvenirs.
Destination 5: Jodhpur – The Blue
City
From Mehrangarh Fort, we gazed at the sprawling Blue City. Mrunmayi was fascinated by the sea of indigo houses.
Highlights included:
· Mehrangarh Fort: Towering walls, ornate palaces, and museums narrating centuries of history.
· Krishna Vilas Haveli: Our stay offered stunning palace views and a taste of royal hospitality.
· Local Cuisine: We relished spicy mirchi vada, tangy chaats, and sweets from famous shops.
The vibrant streets, bustling markets, and warm hospitality made Jodhpur unforgettable.
Destination 6: Udaipur – The City
of Lakes
Udaipur was pure enchantment. Unlike my hometown Bhopal, Udaipur’s lakes were framed by
palaces and glowing lights.
Highlights included:
· City Palace: A grand structure with live sitar performances, blending music and heritage.
· Lake Pichola: Palaces floating on water, illuminated at night.
· Jag Mandir & Jagdish Temple: Architectural marvels.
· Local Delicacies: We savored the famous Ghewar,a royal dessert.
The reflections of palaces shimmering in the lake created a postcard‑perfect view, etching Udaipur forever in our hearts.
Conclusion: A Story Come True
At the end of our journey, I asked Mrunmayi if she was happy. She smiled and said,
“We saw everything from my list, mamma.” Her joy was our greatest reward.
This trip was more than sightseeing — it was living a storybook adventure, blending
Rajasthan’s vibrant culture, majestic architecture, and warm hospitality.
As we returned, I gifted her a new book: “My Trip to Goa.” She laughed and asked, “So
this is our next holiday destination?” And with that, our Rajasthan memoir ended with dreams of the next adventure.
