Exploring Parvati Hill: Pune’s Historic Heritage and Scenic Morning Hike

My daughter Mrunmayi and I love hiking, and this time we chose to explore one of Pune’s most iconic landmarks — Parvati Hill. To our delight, her best friend Gojiri and her mom joined us, and so, packed with hot chocolate for the kids, ginger tea for us moms, and a simple breakfast, we set off around 7 a.m.

Parvati Hill - A Heritage Landmark in Pune

  • Elevation: 2,100 feet above sea level, Pune’s second highest point after Vetal Hill.
  • Steps: 108 stone steps lead to the summit, making it a popular spot for morning walkers.
  • History: The Devdeveshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, was completed in 1749 by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao.
  • Complex: The hill houses five temples — Shiva-Parvati, Kartikeya, Vishnu, Vitthal, and Rama — along with shrines to Surya and Bhawani.

The Hike Experience

Reaching the foothill by auto‑rickshaw was easy since Parvati Hill lies in the heart of Pune. The kids, wearing summer hats, began their climb step by step under our watchful eyes. Fellow hikers encouraged them with cheerful calls of “basu naka” and “chala” — don’t stop, keep going!

As we ascended, the children were fascinated to see buses, cars, and buildings shrink into toy‑like figures below. After about 15 minutes, the temple came into view, motivating them to finish the last stretch for their promised hot chocolate.

Temple and Surroundings

Inside the temple, we offered prayers and admired the blackstone architecture. Behind the shrine, Parijat trees were in full bloom, carpeting the ground with fragrant flowers. The kids loved picking and smelling them — a rare treat in the city.

We spread our mats in a quiet corner, enjoying the panoramic view of Pune while sipping ginger tea and poha, while the kids relished their hot chocolate. The serene atmosphere, combined with the cityscape below, made it a perfect family moment.

Practical Tips for Visitors

  • Timings: Temples open daily from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.; museum from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Best Time to Visit: Early mornings or during Navratri, when the temple is beautifully decorated.
  • Accessibility: Auto‑rickshaws and taxis are available; the climb may be tiring for seniors, but railings and resting spots help.
  • Nearby Attractions: Sarasbaug Temple, Swargate, and Peshwa Park.

Conclusion

Our hike to Parvati Hill was more than just a morning walk — it was a journey through Pune’s history, spirituality, and natural beauty. The panoramic views, the sacred temples, the blooming Parijat flowers, and the rich exhibits of the Peshwa Museum made it a memorable family outing. For Punekars and visitors alike, Parvati Hill offers the perfect blend of heritage, fitness, and tranquility.
