The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma (Book Review)

 The 5 AM Club

By Robin Sharma

Paperback |Audiobook | e-book

In “The 5 am Club” Robin Sharma talks about taking advantage of the tranquility and quietude of 5 am to run a bespoke morning routine that can help you improve your productivity, strengthen your focus and eliminate distraction.

After my daughter was born my whole day would linger around her. It was only when she would go to sleep in the night that I would get some time to look at myself.

Sitting on a cozy couch in my living room I would often spend this time being glued up to my device catching up on my social feed or engaging in mindless entertainment and then go to sleep.

As the days passed, I soon realized I was going nowhere with this unproductive schedule I needed to manage my newfound motherhood well so that I could take good care of my child, family and also work on my personal and professional goals.

Committed to finding a solution for my current situation I started searching on various mom forums online to check out how other moms were balancing out their lives. It was here that I read about the importance of setting up a routine and following it consistently. It was here that someone talked about “The 5 am Club”.

Robin Sharma’s “The 5 am Club” totally transformed the way I operated. From an evening person, I became a morning person just in a days’ time. The book not only helped me set up a productive routine but also helped me reduce digital distraction and mindless online surfing.  I got awestruck with what I read in this book. Hungary for more I joined Robin Sharma’s YouTube channel and mail subscription which continues to inspire me.

Below is the book review of “The 5 am Club” authored by Robin Sharma. Read on to know what the book has in store for you.

What is the book about?

Now, don’t get me wrong this book is not for new mothers but for anyone who wishes to grow her personal power and renew her focus.

In this book, Robin Sharma talks about how setting up a morning routine can elevate your life, he talks about the key things that should be part of the morning routine to develop yourself, how you can install the habit of waking up early and take full advantage of victory hours to power up your performance.

In the book he shares illustrated success models, tried and tested strategies to get rid of digital distraction to improve your focus on self-mastery.

In the book he strongly advocates the concept of becoming master of one rather than a jack of all trades.

Robin narrates all this in a gregarious tone and pushes you to start working on personal mastery by embracing “The 5 am Club”.

What did I like about the book?

Well, I liked the story.

This is a self-help book narrated in the form of a story where an artist and an entrepreneur are invited by a business tycoon on a luxurious holiday to get trained on the 5 am club.

The story  may seem unreal to some, but I was really thrilled to read about the places the characters visited and the activities they participated in  while getting trained.

I also liked the tone of the book; the book continuously pushed me to wake up before my family woke up and taking advantage of the power of early hours I could complete a lot of my pending tasks like painting, reading, developing new skills like starting my personal blog.

What did I learn?

Below are 4 key things that I picked up from this book.

Why the morning hours are called victory hours?

During early morning hours, our brain is in a “flow state”. This is the time when our mind is at peace because the parts of our brain responsible for rational thinking and constant worrying both shut off for some time.  The brain is ready to absorb without causing any internal disturbances.

Also, the serenity and solitude of daybreak triggers the production of dopamine and serotonin the neurotransmitters that make us feel good and stay motivated.

What should I do when I wake up at 5 am?

The author asks to use the morning hours to strengthen what he calls as the four interior empires the 'Mindset', 'Heartset', 'Healthset' and 'Soulset'.

Improve your 'Mindset' by developing a positive mental attitude and learning new things.

Improve 'Heartset' by eliminating negative emotions and inculcating positive habits like gratitude practice.

Improve your 'Healthset' by exercising each day.

Improve your connection with yourself by improving your 'Soulset' by spiritual practices like meditation.

Why do I need a morning routine?

Below extract from the book explains this well.

“Elite producers and everyday heroes understand that what you do each day matters far more than what you do once in a while. Consistency really is a key ingredient of mastery. And regularity is a necessity if you’re amped to make history”.

Why do we get distracted and how to improve focus?

The author says, “The closer you get to your genius, the more you’ll face the sabotage of your fears”.

And so,  you may indulge in distraction and procrastination naturally but the good news is that you can control your brain signals by being aware of its nature.

The author says do not indulge in multitasking instead focus on becoming a master of one task at a time, also practice minimalism, simplify streamline everything to improve focus on what is important to you.

The author has shared many frameworks to improve focus, I implemented the 90 90 1 rule, i.e. dedicating the first 90 mins of your day to doing the one task most important to you consistently while keeping all the distractions out of the bay. The book talks about many such tactics to beat distraction.
