Here’s a list of 7 plants that you can grow in your bathroom.

A plant lover would want to grow plants everywhere in the house, why spare the bathrooms?  You may wonder if plants can grow in  bathrooms? Let me answer it with a big YES. Plants can grow in the bathrooms, sustain and propagate as well.

“Plants in bathrooms will enhance décor and elevate the biophilic appeal of interiors”.

What kind of plants can thrive in a bathroom?

Typically, bathrooms would have low light (natural or artificial), low ventilation, and humidity. Here the key is to choose plants that are susceptible to low light conditions and that can survive in low ventilated spaces. Off course, house plants would pass this criterion, most of the indoor plants love low light and can survive in low ventilation.

In this blog, I will share with you 7 houseplants that I have been growing in my bathroom for the last few years. Each one of these plants is doing exceptionally well.

1.Sansevieria

The first plant on my list is my all-time favorite sansevieria, commonly known as snake plant or mother in laws tongue. This is a low maintenance plant that grows well in low light, low ventilation, and can go without water for days. I have kept this plant all over my apartment. I prefer growing them in small planters and water them weekly.

 Care tips for Sansevieria

-          Any general-purpose potting mix is ok for this plant.

-          Water weekly as it doesn’t like too much water

-          Clean the leaves with a damp cloth once a week to keep the plant clean and leaves shiny.

-           Keep it in a shady place inside your bathroom.

During these turbulent pandemic times seeing a baby leaf grow on this plant has helped me stay hopeful and awe inspired.

This medicinal plant known for its skincare abilities can give you ornamental effects in low light areas. Keep it in a shade or artificial light it can survive. Being a type of succulent aloe vera plant needs less water. Of course the growth inside the bathroom will be slow but it can help elevate the green quotient in the interiors. I also keep changing the spot of this plant from time to time, so that it can breathe in some fresh air.

-          Succulent potting mix is preferable, but it is ok to use general - purpose potting mix.

-          Water once in 2 - 3 weeks.

-          Change its spot if tip of the leaves start drying.

Golden pothos elevates my bathroom décor with its white roots and golden patches on green leaves. Also known as money plant, golden pothos is commonly seen in Indian homes. It thrives indoors as well as outdoors. You can grow it in the soil as well as in water. I am currently growing this in water. Unlike Neon pothos, this plant grows very slowly indoors. I have kept it in my bathroom window so that it can inhale fresh air readily.

These heart shape delicate leaves with colorful mosaic print can brighten up your space easily. Caladium is a seasonal plant. In India, it blooms with the onset of monsoon and can last up to 6 - 7 months. i.e. if it blooms in July it stays till the end of FEB at least. Eventually, the plant dies but if you keep the pot as is and start watering it in May or June, it will bloom again

Care tips to grow Caladium Plant

-          Use general -purpose potting mix.

-          Water twice weekly or as per requirement.

-          Avoid direct exposure to the sun.

-          Keep it near the bathroom window as it would need some fresh air.

One advantage of keeping plants in the bathroom is easy to access to water. You can easily keep an eye on your plants, if the soil is dry, water the plant, if the plant looks dull change its spot or if  the plant is growing in water changing water can be done easily.

A general rule of thumb for plants growing in low ventilated spaces is to try to move the plants from one spot to another, for instance, move your bathroom plant to the living room sometimes or near a window to just let it breathe or absorb light. I generally change places of my plants on weekends, this gives an opportunity to the plants to absorb what they want and a chance to me for a new creative plant arrangement. Check out my experiments below.

If you are still trying to find a spot to keep plants in your bathroom here are some ideas. 1)keep it beside your washbasin, 2) over the bathroom cabinets 3) keep it on bathroom window 4) on the bathroom floor,5) you can also plant them in the hanging basket and hang them inside your bathrooms. Either way plants would enhance the décor and biophilic appeal of interiors, just get started.
